What are foods fighting allergy?
May flowers — along with the month's grasses and other vegetation — are a mixed blessing for people who suffer from seasonal allergies. While your doctor can help you decide what medicines to take, if any, the foods you choose can also help reduce sneezing, watery eyes, and other symptoms. How? When your immune system reacts to allergens, the mucous membranes in your eyes and airways swell up. To the rescue: foods that are naturally anti-inflammatory, especially fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins A, C, and E.
Here's a quick and delicious recipe that stirs in all of these essential nutrients:
Fruit Compote
Ingredients
3/4 cup low-fat cottage cheese
1 teaspoon orange zest
1⁄2 grapefruit (in sections)
1/3 cup Mandarin orange sections
1/2 Granny Smith apple, cored and chopped
1 tablespoon almonds, slivered and toasted
1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
Paprika, to taste
Instructions
In a small mixing bowl combine the cottage cheese with cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange zest. Mound into a serving dish. Combine almonds, apple pieces, grapefruit and orange sections and spoon over cheese. Sprinkle paprika over cheese and serve.
